What impact could Jeremy Pruitt leaving for Tennessee have on Clemson-Alabama?

ESPN's Chris Low reports that Tennessee HC Jeremy Pruitt is expected to be allowed to serve as Alabama's defensive coordinator in the Playoff.

Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has been hired as the next coach at Tennessee.

Another name being discussed is Georgia outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer who coached alongside Pruitt at Georgia.

Pruitt's success this season is particularly impressive given how hard Alabama's defense has been hit by injuries. Pruitt, who was not retained when Kirby Smart took over Georgia's football program in 2016, has been Alabama's defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

There aren't many sure things in college football, but if Pruitt delivers on his promise to build a top notch staff, I think the Vols could be competing for SEC championships under Pruitt within a few years. If Alabama wins, it will move on to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on January 8.

It was reported earlier today that Pruitt added his first staff member in Colorado State's Will Friend.

After the deal died with Schiano, Tennessee was looking to hire Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, but Gundy turned down a contract worth $42 million to stay in Stillwater, Okla. He has also worked under Saban, serving as Alabama's director of player development from 2010-12.

"Six days ago, I mentioned several attributes that I sought to find in the next leader of our football program, and Coach Pruitt meets all criteria", Fulmer said in a statement released on Thursday.

Pruitt is 43 years old and a native of Alabama.

Prior to that he spent two seasons at Georgia following a one year stint as defensive coordinator at Florida State where he helped the Seminoles win the 2013 national championship. Copeland wasn't even on the radar of the previous Tennessee staff, but as soon as it was announced Pruitt had landed the job, things changed in a hurry for the top-ranked receiver from the Sunshine State.

At long last, the mother of all coaching searches is over.

Tennessee was close to hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano in late November, but the deal fell through because of backlash from fans and supporters. And now it appears that Pruitt is pursuing another Colorado State coach, and this coach is also a former Vol player and assistant.
