A USA federal investigator probing alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election asked Deutsche Bank for data on accounts held by President Donald Trump and his family, a person close to the matter said on Tuesday.

But despite multiple USA media outlets reporting that Mr Mueller's investigation had expanded to include Mr Trump's personal financial records, one of the President's lawyers said that was not the case. It said the subpoena was received several weeks ago.

Mueller's investigation - which is looking into alleged Russian interference into last year's US election and whether Trump's winning campaign assisted in those efforts - appears to be entering a new phase.

In July, Trump said in an interview with the New York Times that if Mueller examined his family's finances beyond any relationship with Russian Federation he'd consider it "a violation".

"Deutsche Bank takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigations into this matter", a company statement said. "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Dowd wrote in an email. "The investigation would surely continue, though perhaps with someone who doesn't think his job includes protecting the FBI and Mr. (James) Comey from answering questions about their role in the 2016 election".

Last week Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, pleaded guilty to a single count of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In July, he told the New York Times such an action would amount to crossing a red line.

These reported conversations lead to questions about whether the president was trying to derail the FBI probe and end the investigation into Russian Federation and the 2016 election.

Many media outlets included the denial from Trump's attorney in their reports, but the idea of his bank being subpoenaed for his financial records makes for far juicier headlines.
