"I call on our brothers in neighbouring countries.to stop their aggression and lift the blockade. and we will turn the page", Saleh said.

The army said government forces had repelled a Houthi attack on Mt. Sebahtal in the northern Saada province, with the support of coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia, according to 26sepnews.net, Yemen's national military website.

The Saudis want to restore the internationally-recognised government of President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was forced into retreat and then exile by the fighting. Arab media is reporting that the former president's supporters have gained control of key government installations in the capital, including the defense ministry, the interior ministry and Sana'a Airport.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) said Saturday that the recent military campaign of Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh against the Houthi rebels would benefit the Yemeni people.

Stressing that Yemen's interests lie in avoiding sedition, the Houthi leader called on citizens and tribal fighters to focus on the battle against the invading Saudi regime and stay away from any provocative acts.

The offer came as clashes between Saleh loyalists and rebel fighters intensified in Sana'a.

"The decision by (Saleh's) General People's Congress to take the lead and their choice to side with their people will free Yemen of. militias loyal to Iran", the statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency said.

There was no immediate word on casualties. The country has since fallen into chaos and Mr Saleh later joined the Houthis to drive Mr Hadi out of the capital in 2014.

This is the beginning of a rebellion against the Houthi militias in Sana'a, it added.

A Houthi spokesman was quick to denounce Saleh's comments, accusing the former president of staging a "coup".

Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said at least 80 people have been killed in this week's clashes between forces loyal to Saleh and Houthis.

In a statement on Saturday the Saudi-led coalition praised Saleh for "taking the lead" in the conflict.

For his part, Houthi leader Abdel Malek al-Houthi called on Saleh to end what he called "the sectarian strife" that he has instigated, and threatened to take action against his supporters militarily if he does not.

He told Yemenis all across the country that if they support him, "to defend the nation, the republic and the revolution".

The conflict and a blockade by the coalition has also left more than 20 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the world's largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that is thought to have killed 2,211 people since April.
