Under the plan, the company will tear down 12 of the buildings now used by employees and build 18 new facilities in their place that are expected to be up to twice as tall. Microsoft's Redmond campus, which opened in 1986, now totals 15 million square feet in 125 buildings.

Microsoft has already informed the employees about the plans, and on Wednesday, the company would discuss the plans at the shareholders meeting. The plans will include a 2-acre open plaza that will fit up to 12,000 people, running and walking trails, facilities for soccer and cricket, and retail space.

In their place, and in the acres around them, 18 new buildings will rise, with flexible floor plans meant to foster collaboration, inspiration, and accessibility. "There's an opportunity to build a somewhat denser campus and create a somewhat more urban feel", Smith said. The expansion will add enough room for 8,000 more people, and the construction itself will involve around 2,500 construction and development jobs over the course of the five to seven years it will take to complete.

Microsoft says that the new campus will be more open and less formal. The anchor tenant of the Spring District, perhaps not coincidentally, is the Global Innovation Exchange, the Microsoft-backed graduate education program run by University of Washington and China's Tsinghua University.

With the announcement, Microsoft is seeking to match the workplace upgrades many of its biggest rivals are pursuing.

Usually, technology companies keep expanding their campus to integrate new technology. The expansion will also include $150 million in transportation infrastructure updates, public spaces, sports fields, and a green space.

Microsoft headquarters was from its early days, and well into the 21st century, a campus for software engineers driving their roadsters to parking lots surrounding buildings full of individual offices.

"We've focused on the cultural transformation of the company". Smith said that will give employees and new recruits the option of driving, taking the company's own Connector shuttle or zipping over the lake on the train, making it easier for those who want to live in Seattle and commute to Redmond.
