North Korean Soldier Is Shot While Defecting Across DMZ, South Says

The defector was taken to hospital after being shot by another North Korean soldier, the South's military said.

No tourists were in the Joint Security Area at the time and there was no exchange of gunfire between the two sides.

Seo went on to say that at 3:31 p.m., the JCS spotted the North Korean soldier lying in a pile of leaves some 50 meters south of the Military Demarcation Line and at around 3:56 p.m. three South Korean troops approached the North Korean soldier.

South Korean forces have identified him only as "A" and said the man arrived in the country on Friday.

Four North Korean soldiers chased after him, firing at least 40 rounds, including some with an AK-47 assault rifle, officials said Tuesday after reviewing security camera footage from the border.

"He then exited the vehicle and continued fleeing south across the line as he was sacked upon by other soldiers from North Korea", it said in a statement.

The rare defection took place as a joint naval exercise, which included three American aircraft carriers and seven South Korean warships, was being carried out in waters off South Korea's east coast.

It wasn't immediately known how serious the soldier's injuries were or why he made a decision to defect. The US has around 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea.

According to the South Korean military there was no exchange of fire across the border, and the UNC statement stressed that no South Korean or U.S. forces were harmed.

The defection came during escalated tensions between the North and the South and almost a week after President Trump visited Seoul for his five-country Asia tour.

"The military has raised its alertness against the North Korean military's possible provocations and is maintaining its full readiness posture", the official said.

Two American soldiers also were killed in the DMZ by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers in a 1976 brawl over an attempt to trim a poplar tree. In 1998, a North Korean solider fled to South Korea via Panmunjom. More than a million mines are believed to be buried inside the zone.

These were the first gunshots fired at the truce village of Panmunjom in 33 years and the first defection of a North Korean soldier since 2007. They stand only several yards away from tall South Korean soldiers wearing aviator sunglasses and standing motionless like statues.
