DUBAI - The King is returning, stronger than ever.

Chevrolet has presented a new track-focused version of its Corvette - and the supercar is the company's most powerful production model yet.

"I've never driven a Corvette like this before, and nobody else has either, because there's never been one like this before", said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development, and former boss of Holden.

There will be no mistaking a ZR1 from the other high performance Corvette variant.

Hidden underneath the chiseled front end is a new underwing that creates downforce to keep the ZR1 stuck to the road. First and foremost is the new supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V-8 under the ZR1 hood.

The ZR1 is available with either a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox, equipped with paddle shifters, marking the first time an automatic has been offered in the ZR1. It's the first time an automatic transmission has been offered in a ZR1.

Consider for a moment that is also 300 hp more than the base Corvette Stingray and you realize this auto means the business. It has 13 heat exchangers in total thanks to the addition of four radiators, an opening in the carbonfibre bonnet that the entire supercharger/intercooler assembly pokes through, and a completely new design for the front fascia to make sure enough air is channelled through to that LT5 V8.

That bigger supercharger meant a taller engine altogether, one that wouldn't clear the hood; so, while the center carbon-fibre section looks like one piece, it's actually separate, with the intercooler on top poking through, in a sort of retro "shaker hood" style.

"As the highest-performing Corvette ever, the ZR1's design supports its capability in every way", says exterior design manager Kirk Bennion.

A low wing package decreases downforce in comparison, but it's with this package that the claimed 210mph top speed can be achieved. A "standard rear low wing" will serve up that 210-mph dragstrip speed, while an adjustable "high wing" will enhance downforce and improve racetrack go-around-corners performance.

The high wing comes with the "ZTK Performance Package", which includes a front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 summer-only tires, and re tuned magnetic ride control.

Both of the rear wings are tied directly into the car's chassis, as on the C7.R race vehicle, for the best possible strength and stability. Additionally, Chevy had developed a new a Sebring Orange paint scheme with orange calipers to cover the Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, Even the cabin gets orange and bronze accents that highlight the performance bit. The nose of the ZR1, meanwhile, has been heavily redesigned to provide additional airflow for the engine and cooling systems.
