TripAdvisor is making it easier for users to see if any safety concerns have been flagged about hotels they're researching.

A spokesman for the website told CBS News: 'These badges will remain on TripAdvisor for up to 3 months; however, if the issues persist we may extend the duration of the badge.

Businesses will be "badged for a minimum period of three months, and we hope it will be a catalyst ... to change their ways", Hoyt said.

According to Glamour, "Upon the launch of this new feature, Paraiso Maya was one of the locations that TripAdvisor issued the warning badge for. 'No, we're not going to call the police, ma'am, '" she recalled in her conversation with the outlet.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya and Iberostar did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside of business hours.

Last week, it emerged that a mother of two had been fighting for seven years to have her TripAdvisor posts reinstated after she claimed she was raped at a resort by a security guard. When nothing came of her complaint, she posted a warning on TripAdvisor, but it was promptly deleted.

TripAdvisor has added a badge to its pages warning customers of sexual assault and other serious crime at certain destinations.

The website had even deleted earlier advisory warnings from before she took the trip about the resort, on the basis that the reviews were not "family friendly". He said the level of moderation was a "bit of an overreach in 2010".

That policy was changed in the years after the incident.

It says: "TripAdvisor has been made aware of recent media reports or events concerning this property which may not be reflected in reviews found on this listing".

He also said the badges were meant to inform people, not punish the hotel.

"Our vetting of news reports continues and it is likely more businesses will receive this badge as more information is reviewed". They have also used it to mark hotels which are suspected of posting fake reviews and to mark when major news events do not reflect the hotel in question.

"In that review, there's a line about a doctor making a medical diagnosis".

Now, users will be told exactly which part of their review violates guidelines. "Several of them have chosen to rewrite their reviews and edit out that second-hand information".
