NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 12: Fans flip as Chris Jericho challenges Kenny Omega

Away from the glamorous world of WWE, Japan is arguably the second biggest country in terms of interest in wrestling and Jericho looks to shift his focus to New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Jericho early Sunday morning formally challenged New Japan Pro-Wrestling United States champion Kenny Omega, considered by many to be the best wrestler in the world, to a match at Wrestle Kingdom 12 - NJPW's equivalent of WWE's WrestleMania - on January 4, 2018, in what is expected to be a non-title match.

ProWrestling.com first reported weeks ago that Jericho had been in discussions with NJPW officials and the site claims the plan to wrestle Kenny Omega has been in place since mid-summer.

Most people assumed that Jericho's back-and-forth banter with Omega over Twitter was about setting up a potential match or confrontation on the Ayatollah of Rock'n'Rolla's cruise.

Another fight after Bucs' Mike Evans blindsides Saints' Marshon Lattimore

Beyonce confirmed for The Lion King

Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl desertion sentence: Dishonorable discharge, no prison time
Nina Banks, a defense attorney, said it wouldn't be justice to rescue Bergdahl from the Taliban "only to place him in a cell" now. Bergdahl pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy on October 16 and faced the possibility of life in prison.

Wrestling fans thought Jericho vs. Omega would have happened in October 2018 during a special cruise ship event staged by Jericho himself.

All of that means that Jericho has a huge backlog of brilliant - and sometimes forgotten - matches, many of them disparate in style from the type he has fought in WWE over the last decade.

That said, it's interesting Jericho will be wrestling in Japan after spending so much time with the WWE. WWE will have to up its game if it wants to excite fans for WrestleMania 34.

Following the promo, Omega would speak in Japanese and accept the match.
