Chipmakers Intel and AMD announce historic partnership to better compete with Nvidia

The main objective of this partnership is to bring top-tier gaming to thin-and-light notebook PCs by integrating the Intel Core microprocessor with a custom AMD Radeon graphics core.

The collaboration is being interpreted as a way for Intel and AMD to counteract the increasing success of Nvidia's GPUs. Nevertheless, Intel did pointed out that the new processor is combination of Intel Core H-series CPU together with a semi-custom AMD Radeon GPU. To do this, Intel says it will rely on a new technology called Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB), which it says can reduce the average silicon footprint to "less than half that of standard discrete components on a motherboard" by combining the CPU and discrete graphics into a single processor package. This is the first partnership between the two companies since the 1980s, who have for years battled in the CPU arena; Intel had been on top in terms of CPU power and performance until AMD's Ryzen processors made their debut this year. Nvidia also produces its own integrated chips for small form factor notebooks, as well as high-powered GPUs designed for portable workstations and gaming laptops. AMD is very specific in pointing out that this new chip will be aimed at more serious gamers, whereas the Ryzen chips can run general games, but aren't designed for the specific goal of serious gaming.

Monday's partnership might sound odd, given that AMD and Intel have been competitors for years in the PC chip industry. The Intel-AMD partnership on this chip could represent a joint move to push back on NVIDIA's aggressive launch schedule and powerful graphics components that have always been gamer favorites.

Another fight after Bucs' Mike Evans blindsides Saints' Marshon Lattimore
In his postgame news conference, Saints coach Sean Payton was adamant that Evans should have been ejected as a result of the hit. For their part, the Buccaneers are officially listing Winston as questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

Turn back the clocks: Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday
But, with MA attempting to mark the end of Daylight Saving Time, California might move to do the same - and it should. Many countries near the equator do not adjust their clocks for daylight saving.

Alberta's unemployment rate dips to 7.8% as province gains 12000 full-time jobs
While the number of full-time positions swelled by 88,700, it was offset by losses in part-time work which shed 53,400 jobs. The national economy added 35,500 net jobs in October, but more young people are looking for work, says Statistics Canada .

For now, Intel and AMD aren't giving technical details behind the new chip, like how fast the cores on it will run.

The power sharing framework is a connection among the processor, graphics chip, and graphics memory, with software drivers and interfaces in the semi-custom discrete GPU that coordinates information among all three elements.

At the heart of this new design is EMIB, a small intelligent bridge that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in extremely close proximity.

The new Core H processor is the first consumer product to use EMIB, and will be released in the first quarter of 2018, and many laptop makers are expected to offer products powered by the chip. It will also be interesting to see how this affects Nvidia.
