Levi is also known for NBC's spy comedy Chuck, the animated hit Tangled, and the recent TV drama Alias Grace. Shazam! is an adaptation of the almost 80-year-old continuity of Earth's Mightiest Mortal.

"Honored and greatly humbled to be a part of the #dcuniverse by bringing the original Captain Marvel to life", he wrote on Instagram. It was only in 1970s that the DC banner took over the character.

Zachary Levi is going to be Earth's mightiest mortal. This process has been in the works for months, but fans have been left waiting for official word on who will play Billy Batson and his superhero form of Shazam. He's not the only actor to be in both DC and Marvel films. The $15 million horror sequel has earned a big $303 million worldwide since opening in August.

For those who aren't fully aware of the Shazam storyline, the comic books have followed a youngster named Billy who's able to transform into his superhero alter ego Shazam simply by saying the word; an acronym of historical gods Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury.

Shazam first appeared in 1939, when he was known by the name Captain Marvel. Recent Shazam comics have had the character calling himself Shazam (which can be unsafe when saying your name also turns you back into a powerless adolescent). The film will not tie into any of the other DCEU films, and there will be no appearances by other DCEU franchise characters.

New Line is eying a February 2018 start for principle photography in Toronto and a release date of April 5, 2019 has been given. Creation producer Peter Safran is reuniting with Sandberg for the film, and is also producing DC's Aquaman for Warner Bros.

Sandberg, who is directing the film for New Line, tweeted a link to The Hollywood Reporter's article about the DC Comics movie casting news, but Sandberg did not comment further on it.
