Man Arrested After Getting Locked in Beer Cooler

The beer cooler automatically locks at midnight, and did so while Van Ert was inside.

A man was locked inside a convenience store's beer cooler and had several drinks before fleeing hours later.

Police in the town of Marshfield say Jeremy Van Ert, 38, walked into the local Kwik Trip convenience store Tuesday night to buy some beer.

Van Ert remained in the cooler until 6 a.m. Wednesday, when a customer noticed him and alerted employees. When he went into the store's cooler to retrieve his beverage of choice, the cooler door closed behind him, locking him in. When employees let him out, he left the store without paying for the things he'd consumed - an 18-ounce bottle of Icehouse beer and three cans of Four Loko. He also fell over a stack of 30-can beer packs, breaking three cases open.

Police later arrested Van Ert, who was issued a misdemeanor citation for walking out on his bar tab. He said he might as well just stay inside the cooler and drink. "I've been here 20 years and I've never".

Van Ert is being held in the Wood County Jail on probation hold due to an unrelated case. Police said the conditions of Van Ert's probation banned him from consuming alcohol.

Kwik Trip management said they would be reviewing their security after the incident, WAOW reported.
