DA Thomas Spota 'leaving my post' after federal indictment

The federal indictment stems from an incident in December 2012, when, authorities say, then-Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke beat a jailed inmate who had been arrested for breaking into his vehicle.

- A federal grand jury has indicted Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota on charges that he obstructed an FBI investigation into the county's police chief. The prosecutors are slated to be arraigned in Central Islip federal court later this afternoon.

They're facing charges of tampering with witnesses, witness tampering, obstruction of justice and deprivation of civil rights.

The chief of the DA's Government Corruption Bureau, Christopher McPartland, was also indicted, the AP reported. "The crimes they're charged with are rivaled only by the conduct they allegedly attempted to hide".

Spota, a Democrat, was elected 16 years ago and is not running for re-election.

But more recently, he found himself under scrutiny by federal agents who were investigating a weird attack on a criminal suspect carried out by his friend and the county's police chief at the time, James Burke.
