Since his initial kneeling stance previous year, several more NFL players have knelt or raised a fist during the national anthem in protest against the same issues Kaepernick was trying to bring attention to.

Kaepernick hasn't fielded questions publicly since his final game with the 49ers last January.

NFL owners will meet next week to consider changes to a game manual that says players "should" stand during the national anthem, a guideline the league has left to the discretion of players.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick may be out of a job playing professional football, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have job prospects out there. They said, 'I support the players, I support the cause.' But then if you did how could you tell them that they couldn't kneel?

"We look forward to him joining the conversation", said Joe Lockhart, executive vice president of communications for the NFL.

The movement within the National Football League had mostly subsided this year until President Donald Trump told a rally in Alabama last month that owners should get rid of players who kneel during the anthem. The quarterback recently filed a grievance alleging collusion by the NFL owners to keep him out of the league.

Trump's rhetoric led to players from the 49ers and other teams taking a knee or staying off of the field altogether while the national anthem played. It remains unclear if Kaepernick would attend without an official invitation from the league.

Those meetings are scheduled for next Tuesday in NY.

It will be the second dialogue between the owners and players about the NFL supporting the players and their concerns about societal issues that were raised by Kaepernick during the preseason in 2016, when he sat during the national anthem.
