Andrew Cuomo added electronic cigarettes to the Clean Indoor Air Act, which bans their use everywhere that prohibits smoking tobacco products.

NY joins a growing list of U.S. states, such as California, Connecticut and New Jersey, that has banned vaping in indoor public spaces such as bars and restaurants, in much the same way they restrict smoking. NY created the act in 2003, making it one of the country's first states to ban smoking tobacco products in public indoor areas.

The new law has the backing of the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association.

The bill bans the use of e-cigarettes in places where you're not allowed to smoke regular cigarettes.

New York City banned e-cigs back in 2013, including the measure in the city's Smoke Free Air Act.

"This new law not only protects public health by restricting the use of e-cigarettes and the public's exposure to smoke-cigarette emissions", said Jeff Seyler, the executive vice president of American Lung Association's Northeast region, but also children, for whom the products are "just another tool reeling them into a unsafe and often lifetime of addiction to nicotine".

NY has not been as open to vaping as other states, citing concerns about the product. In addition, some of the liquids used in e-cigarettes have been found to contain toxic and potentially carcinogenic metals.

The New York State Court of Appeals rejected the most recent challenge to New York City's ban earlier this year, finding the inclusion of e-cigs in the law was valid.
