Malayalam director IV Sasi passes away at 69

I V Sasi, who did his diploma in painting, started his film career as an art director in 1968, and he went on to create than 150 movies in different languages for Indian cinema. He was 69 and was undergoing treatment. Sasi was being taken to hospital after he complained of breathing problems, but he died around 11.15 am on his way to the Surya hospital here. He also had some Tamil and Hindi movies to his credit.

Amongst his biggest successes was the 1978 film "Avalude Ravukal", which established him in the Malayalam film industry.

His debut feature film as a director was Utsavam which released in 1975 and starred Srividya, Sankaradi, Raghavan and Sukumaran in lead roles. His most noted films so far include Alkoottathil Thaniye, Kanamarayathu, Aksharangal and Vadakaykkoru Hrudayam.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the demise of Sasi and said he was a filmmaker who rewrote the conventional formula in the Malayalam film industry.

It was I.V. Sasi who introduced actress Seema to the Malayalam cinema industry through his hit film Avalude Raavukal. "My support & love to my sister Seema Sasi & family", Kamal Hassan wrote. The Hindi movie Anokha Rishta, starring Smita Patil and Rajesh Khanna, is also one of IV Sasi's celebrated movies. Actor Mamukkoya remembered Sasi as a man who breathed and live cinema.

Mammootty's son Dulquer Salmaan wrote on Facebook, "RIP Sasi uncle! Have fond memories of him from my childhood". Think of the superstars of the South and you can bet that IV Sasi has called the shots in bringing out their best performances ever! "So many personal memories!"
