Meijer, Whole Foods, others recall packaged vegetables on listeria concerns

The recalled products were distributed throughout the USA and Canada to Walmart, Trader Joe's and Archer Farms, a brand sold at Target. A California company has recalled many of its vegetable products due to a possible listeria contamination. So far, health officials have not reported any illnesses associated with these products.

Among the biggest retail recalls, stemming from Mann Packing's, is Meijer's.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that causes weakened immune systems or fatal infections in young children and frail adults, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Albertsons, Randalls, Tom Thumb stores in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas are among the stores voluntarily recalling Ready. They all have "best if used by" dates of October 11 to October 20 on the front side of the packaging.

Walmart: 12-oz. bags of broccoli cauliflower florets, broccoli florets and stir fry medley are being recalled, along with 32-oz. bags of broccoli florets, 16-oz. bags of broccoli slaw, 10-ounce bags of cauliflower florets and super blend, 16-oz. bags of cauliflower and 2-lb. bags of vegetable medley.

Canadian inspectors found listeria in a Mann Packing product named in the CP Fresh notice as Mann Packing Power Blend bagged salad.

All products should be either tossed out or returned where they were bought for refund.

The affected products include Mann's Family Favorites Broccoli Florets, Vegetable Medley, Brussels Sprouts and many more minimally processed vegetable products. "This voluntary recall is a reflection of our commitment to ensuring the safety of our consumers".

The FDA says that although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and early labor among pregnant women.
