Trump offered a grieving military father $25000 in a phone call

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Trump offered the money during a telephone conversation with the father of Dillon Baldrige a few weeks after the 22-year-old was killed in Afghanistan on June 10.

Mr Baldridge received a call from the president after his son's death.

"He said, "I'm going to write you a cheque out of my personal account for $25,000", and I was just floored", Mr Baldridge explained to the Washington Post.

The timing of Trump's donation raised questions because the Post reported Wednesday that White House official initially declined to discuss the events in detail but later told them the check had been sent. "It's disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognized as a generous and honest gesture, made privately by the President, and using it to advance the media's biased agenda", a White House spokeswoman told the Post.

At the same time, the White House is dealing with Trump stating that President Barack Obama didn't call all the families those killed during his presidency and suggesting that reporters ask his chief of staff, retired Gen. John Kelly, whether Obama called him after his son died in Afghanistan. Trump had taken flak for taking too long to make a public statement about the four US soldiers who were killed in an ambush in Niger on October 4.

"I had a very nice conversation with the woman, with the wife who ... sounded like a lovely woman", he said. "I know it was kind of far-fetched thinking".

"I hand-carried checks for four thousand dollars or five thousand dollars to people who had written him", White House assistant Frank J. Kelly told Kessler. At least two never got a call or letter, and another family received no call. "I'd rather have him back than any dollar amount", he said.

Trump claims Obama, other former presidents didn't call families of fallen soldiers
His accusation that most presidents did not call families of military personnel killed in action is provoking a heated response. Trump later said that he thinks Obama "did sometimes [call], and sometimes he didn't, I don't know, that's what I was told".

On Tuesday, Trump boasted that he has called "virtually" all the families of fallen service members since he's been president and claimed, erroneously, that "most" other presidents have not placed calls.

Trump got into a Twitter battle Wednesday with Democratic Rep. Frederica S. Wilson of Florida over his comments to the family of Sgt.

Trump still insists the congresswoman was lying, though he has specifically responded to the families who've made similar claims just yet.

"The check has been sent", Lindsay Walters, White House spokeswoman, told CNN on Wednesday.

Johnson's mother also called the president's comments disrespectful.

Trump, asked by reporters about an earlier tweet saying he had "proof " of what he said, the president said: "let her (Wilson) make her statement again and you'll find out". "All of the individuals that the president has been presented with through the proper protocol have been contacted through that process".
