Roger Goodell: "We believe everyone should stand for the national anthem"

NFL owners ended a two-day meeting Wednesday without enacting a measure that would require players to stand for the national anthem prior to games.

Goodell noted that only six or seven players are now protesting during the national anthem and said the league is going to work to make that number zero by addressing the underlying issues of those protests.

"We did not ask for that", Goodell said.

Goodell reiterated that the league and its 32 clubs "believe everyone should stand for the national anthem". Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said his team would bench any player who protests during the anthem and thereby, in Jones's view, shows disrespect to the American flag.

NFL players and owners have scheduled a follow-up meeting for October 31 to continue their discussions from Tuesday on how the league and players can work together to support causes and issues of importance to the players, sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano.

"We spent today talking about the issues that our players have been trying to bring attention to".

"I will tell you that our players are men of great character - they have a very deep understanding and tremendous knowledge of the issues that are going on in all our communities".

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who first popularized the gesture previous year, said he settled on kneeling as a form of protest because it is widely seen as a gesture of respect.
