We're talking the same masses that are now barely able to hit average 4G download speeds of around 15 Mbps stateside, according to OpenSignal's latest global "State of LTE" report.

First on the development of a modem for 5G back in January, the company said Intel. Qualcomm today announced Snapdragon 636, a new mobile processor that offers improved performance, enhanced gaming and display technology support for mid-range smartphones.

It even shared a mmWave (millimeter wave) 5G smartphone reference design. As the name shows, this is more of an incremental update over the Snapdragon 630, also launched this year.

The most notable increments in the new chip come in the form of support for 18:9 aspect ratio displays and Full HD + resolutions.

Qualcomm also announced its first 5G reference phone. It also supports Assertive Display, so we can expect better visibility in improper lighting conditions.

The Qualcomm Technologies has recently unveiled the new mobile platform "Snapdragon 636" touting the notable improvements over the performance display and gaming. The Snapdragon 636 is built on a 14nm FinFET process and is pin- and software-compatible with the Snapdragon 660 and 630 platforms, allowing any manufacturer to drop the new processor right inside their devices without modifications.
