BJP distances itself from Som's Taj Mahal remarks

Speaking to ANI, the BJP MLA said, "I don't oppose Taj Mahal".

Firebrand Som lamented on the opposition for criticising the omission of infamous Taj Mahal. "I oppose Mughals who built it and how they've been portrayed in the Indian history".

Sangeet Som was addressing a public gathering in Meerut's Sisoli village when he expressed his desire to change the history while making a blunder when he said that Shah Jahan had jailed his father.

When asked about the Taj Mahal being dropped from a recent list of the state's historical sites, Som had questioned why "people like the man who built it" should be considered part of Indian culture and history.

Earlier this month, Taj Mahal's absence in a new tourism brochure of Uttar Pradesh sparked outrage. What place's history? Whose history?

The BJP stepped into the row with party spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao describing Muslim rule in India as "barbaric and a period of incomparable intolerance" while asserting that its members could hold any opinion they want on specific monuments. Som added that the BJP is now trying to wipe out names of famous Mughal leaders like Akbar, Aurangzeb, Babur and more. "He targeted Hindus in Uttar Pradesh and Hindustan", he claimed.

The BJP government would make sure their valour and sacrifice is properly respected, Som said.

The Hyderabad lawmaker's statement came after a video showing Sangeet Som's controversial remark on Taj Mahal went viral.

Soon after the controversy, the state government issued a press release saying, "Tourism projects worth Rs 370 crore are proposed, under which schemes worth Rs 156 crore are meant for the Taj Mahal and its surrounding areas in Agra".

Som has been known for making communally-charged statements and was earlier booked as well for making inflammatory statements with regard to the Muzaffarnagar riots, although he was later cleared of the charges.

Party president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said Red Fort in Delhi was also built by "Traitors" "Traitors also build Red Fort will MODI stop hoisting Tiranga?"
