Jason Garrett says Jerry Jones meeting was out of love

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Sunday that any Dallas player who does not stand for the national anthem and is "disrespectful to the flag" would not play.

While the Cowboys already have a team policy in place regarding the anthem, Goodell's letter suggested a new rule, similar to the NBA's requirement for its players to stand for the anthem, could be enacted after discussing the matter at the fall meetings on October 17 and 18.

Tony Covington, a former National Football League player who now serves as Senior Director of Corporate Affairs for the NAACP, deemed Jones' comments as "more than tone-deaf, more than misinformed and misguided" in an official statement.

"A big salute to Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, who will BENCH players who disrespect our Flag", Trump tweeted. A local labor union has filed a complaint to the National Labor Relations Board against the Cowboys saying Jones' threats prevent allowable, "concerted activity" at work.

Jones said the NFL's operations manual left the issue of standing for the national anthem ambiguous.

One player said Jones expected the Cowboys will continue to stand during the anthem.

Garrett said the meeting was out of "love, admiration and respect for the players". "Now that the president has gotten involved in it and you've seen owners responding by at least stating they will take disciplinary action, it makes it closer to being related to terms and conditions of their employment". "That's what this says to me and to mine", Wilbon said, imitating what he assessed as Jones' thoughts.

"I think my first responsibility is to listen and provide that forum for them, and then my next job is to relay that to the people that I talk to in that representation", Bailey said. He is always speaking to the media about the team. "I like that song", said Scandrick.

Jones is a supporter of President Donald Trump, who has been a vocal critic of the national anthem protests.

"The message will be put out", Quin said.
