Las Vegas gunman shot security guard before massacre

When Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire from a sniper's nest perched 32 floors above the Las Vegas Strip, slaughtering at least 58 people, Floyd Conrade was "starting to wind down for the night" in the hotel room directly underneath the shooter.

Officials, who had previously credited Campos with stopping the assault by pulling his attention away from the concert, are allegedly still looking for an explanation as to why Paddock stopped his assault before ultimately killing himself.

A maintenance worker also went to enter the 32 floor shortly after Campos was injured, but Campos "prevented him from receiving any injuries", Lombardo said.

As the indiscriminate killings continued, police said, cameras were positioned inside and outside Paddock's hotel suite and in the door's peep hole.

At 10:05 p.m., Paddock, 64, began firing into the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, authorities said.

Sergeant Joshua Bitsko and Officer Dave Newton of the K9-unit had been training dogs when they heard the message over police radio about an active shooter.

McMahill said investigators had reviewed voluminous video from the casino and don't think Paddock had an accomplice in the shooting, but they want to know if anyone knew about his plot beforehand.

But on Monday, the timeline changed.

"The prostitute, who did not give a name, said Paddock had a habit of hiring hookers on his frequent jaunts to Sin City, where he celebrated casino wins with 'really aggressive and violent sex", according to Britain's The Sun newspaper.

The guard was investigating an alarm signalling that a door had been left open on the same floor as Paddock's room, officials said on Monday.

Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said investigators had "looked at literally everything" and still do not have a clear motive.

A flyweight fight between Marco Beltran and Matt Schnell will be moved up on the card and act as the featured preliminary fight. The pair were scheduled to met at UFC 215, but Borg was forced out of the bout due to illness during fight week.

Lombardo said that the revised timeline is based on new information that emerged over the course of the ongoing investigation.

That raises questions about what the killer had been planning before Campos disturbed him, and why police did not arrive sooner.

The sheriff said authorities have received 200 accounts of Paddock traveling throughout Las Vegas, and that he "has never been seen with anyone else".

But police have said they suspect he had help before the killings, based on the large number of guns, ammunition and explosives found in the hotel suite, his home, his vehicle and a second home searched in Reno. "There are also areas where you have a higher population of collectors", Rabadi said. "So he had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there".

Before checking into Mandalay Bay days before the massacre, Paddock rented a room at a Las Vegas condo complex that overlooked another music festival.

After searches of Paddock's belongings by investigators, it was determined that he was in possession of a substance commonly used to build improvised explosive devices, however it was not found in the form of an explosive when it was found. Investigators also found aluminium nitrate and aluminium powder.

One officer described approaching the shooter's room as a "deadly game of hide and seek" before they stormed in and found his body and an arsenal of guns.

Authorities said they were unsure why Paddock rented the room, or about his motive.

"That's been a matter of discussion, whether what I said was accurate or not". The sheriff gleaned insight from the trip, he said, and the department now reacts more quickly to such shootings, forming a team to "cease the action" of the assailant.

"I'm trying to get them to understand Steve's mindset", Eric Paddock said.

Lombardo said Paddock was drilling a wall near a doorway but didn't finish.
