Walmart acquires NY last-mile startup Parcel

"New York City is the top market for both Jet and, and because of the density of the area - along with the proximity of our fulfilment centres - it's the ideal place for high-impact innovation", Nate Faust, senior vice president for the retailer's e-commerce supply chain, said in a post on the company blog.

Nate Faust, svp/U.S. e-commerce supply chain, Walmart, stated that delivery is a top and increasingly important consideration for today's online shoppers, demanding speed, flexibility, and reliability.

The idea is for Parcel to help Walmart with the most expensive final stretch of its same-day and scheduled shipping throughout the city. "This acquisition allows us to continue testing ways to offer fast delivery while lowering our operating costs".

Founded in 2013, Parcel's customers include meal-kit services like Chef'd and Martha Stewart's Martha & Marley Spoon. Jet already has been testing free same-day delivery of certain orders to customers there, Mr. Faust said. Walmart says it plans to use Parcel's delivery capabilities for last-mile deliveries to customers within New York City for general merchandise and grocery shipments. User who signed up for Parcel could schedule a delivery within a 2-hour window, much like the same-day delivery options offered by select cities. Additionally, the area's density, as well as the proximity of Walmart's fulfillment centers, makes the city the ideal place for "high-impact innovation", Faust asserted.

"The traffic in a place like New York City tends to be a pretty big obstacle that we've done an awesome job of optimizing for", Parcel CEO and founder Jesse Kaplan said. "No problem" emblazoned on the side in big letters. Earlier this year, Jet announced a partnership with Latch, another New York-based startup that offers keyless entry for delivery personnel to leave packages inside a doorman-less apartment building. The company points out that NYC's high density makes it a great location for same-day delivery.

New York City is also the testing ground for rival Target, which announced plans to purchase Grand Junction in August. "It's pretty small. So if it doesn't work it's only in one market and won't be a disaster".

Walmart is now locked in a fierce battle with, whose Prime members can get free two-hour delivery on some items and same-day delivery for free on some others.
