Businesses May Soon Get to Tweet Longer Messages - with Testing of #280characters

CHANG: Twitter's co-founder tweeted yesterday that the company is pursuing efforts to combat harassment. Longer tweets will make the service easier to use so you don't need to edit down a post to cram it into 140 characters.

"This is because in languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese you can convey about double the amount of information in one character as you can in many other languages, like English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French".

Twitter plans to collect data on the test and evaluate it before offering longer tweets to all users.

Twitter confirmed in a blog post today that it would be gifting the 280-limit to a select few people in the world as a test, before going world-wide.

We're trying something new with a small group, and increasing the character limit to 280!

For example, less than 1% of Japanese tweets hit the 140-character limit, while almost 10% of English tweets did, according to Twitter.

This is an experiment on a small group of Twitter users and should it work, it might be a regular feature on the social media app.

Meanwhile, the company's share price has dipped 43 percent in the past year, closing Tuesday at $16.59. And users have found creative ways to get around the restrictions, including taking screenshots of blocks of text and highlighting relevant phrases.

Only 9% of Tweets in English take up the full space. Additionally, a more engaged user base could further entice ad spend on the platform.

However, Dorsey has obviously changed his mind. The company has partnered with Major League Baseball and the National Football League to deliver games, betting that Twitter is inherently a compelling place to watch live sports and engage with fans at the same time.

Twitter's biggest challenge is growing its user base among real people - and not the bots and anonymous trolls that clutter it with objectionable material. Twitter, by comparison, can appear intimidating to neophytes.

A 140 character tweet (left) and 280 character tweet (right). The platform is beholden to consumers of real-time news (perhaps the opposite of fun?) and people with a penchant for sharing terse opinions.

On the other hand, a growing body of users feel constrained by the 140-character limit, observed Michael Jude, research manager at Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan.
