Iran tests new missile defying US warnings

The report by the FARS agency says that as "one of the 24 founding members of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space", Iran is "entitled to master the technology of launching satellites into orbit".

The United States extended sanctions relief for Iran last week as part of the agreement, which President Donald Trump has described as "the worst deal ever".

"But it is no good talking about this if the USA is not honoring the nuclear agreement", he said.

Iran says all of its missiles are created to carry conventional warheads only and has limited their range to a maximum of 2,000km, although commanders say they have the technology to go further.

Iran released footage of the successful test-launch of its new ballistic missile, Khorramshahr, a few hours after it was unveiled during a military parade in Tehran.

Previous Iranian missile launches have triggered U.S. sanctions and accusations that they violate the spirit of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers.

In addition to carrying out missile tests, Iran has also launched a space satellite and fired missiles at Islamic State group targets in eastern Syria in recent months.

The first days saw a dramatic scramble with picks, shovels and bare hands to reach survivors, and well over 100 were saved. But that means almost 1,000 were found uninhabitable - and the number seemed likely to rise as more are inspected.

The nuclear agreement reached during the Obama administration doesn't strictly prohibit Iran from developing missiles.

What's new, he said, is that Iran says its ballistic missiles can carry multiple warheads and maybe several cluster bombs. "Not much of an agreement we have!"

The president has said he's already made a decision about whether or not Iran is in compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear deal.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump called the agreement "one of the worst and most one-sided transactions" in US diplomatic history and an "embarrassment to the United States".

The Khorramshahr missile was paraded, despite warnings from the United States against Iran's weapons program, in the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and senior military leaders.

"Whether you like it or not, we are going to strengthen our military capabilities which are necessary for deterrence", Rouhani said in a speech broadcast live on state television as Iran displayed the new missile at a military parade marking the anniversary of the outbreak of its devastating 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

"We can not let a murderous regime continue these destabilizing activities while building unsafe missiles", he added.
