IDPH reported the first human case of West Nile on July 20.

The Department of Public Health reports the first West Nile-related death in the state. Past year 155 people were infected, and six died.

IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah said in a statement that although cooler weather is beginning, West Nile virus is still a concern.

People who do become ill after contracting the virus may develop a fever, headache and rash that lasts a few days.

"As was shared at a press conference on August 15, 2017, it is not uncommon for mosquitoes in the area to test positive for West Nile", officials said Monday. Residents can also use DEET-based repellent and stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur.
