6th grader says rights violated when forced to stand for Pledge

I was so confused.

A teacher in eastern MI has been placed on administrative leave after she was accused of "violently snatching" a sixth-grade student from his chair as he stayed seated for the Pledge of Allegiance. According to The Detroit News, "the youth had declined to stand for the pledge since second grade after learning Chaney had also stopped as a way of decrying social injustices".

Chaney has not returned to school and his family was exploring whether to withdraw him from the school district, his father, Brian, said. The boy does not believe in pledging to the flag. "The teacher allegedly involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation". He said students have the right to skip the Pledge of Allegiance.

We need a mandatory in-service day for all public school teachers on this subject, during which they learn what authority the school has and what rights the students have on a wide range of subjects. I pledge to God and to my family'.

Heitsch explained the district "cannot speculate" about what the investigation will uncover but assured parents the school expects "every child and adult in our district to be treated with dignity and respect".

"We want people to know people have rights".

"It's his choice to sit, I don't make him sit".

'I'm looking at my son as a hero.

What's even more troubling about this situation is that as a teacher's consultant, the person who dragged this child is tasked with training other teachers on how to manage their classrooms.

Chaney said he'd prefer to keep his son, who he said is a 4.0 student, in the Farmington district, because "we've had a wonderful relationship".

Chaney said he is not comfortable sending his son back to a school where the teachers have set a negative tone. They said it's likely they're going to pull Stone from the district.

Stone's decision to sit during the Pledge of Allegiance comes about a year after NFL players and other athletes began protests of the national anthem during games.
