Meet Jaguar's new connected Sayer steering wheel of the future

This steering wheel concept is meant to live in the user's home and over time become a trusted companion.

That's because the wheel, which looks more like a piece of expensive sculpture, comes with voice-activated artificial intelligence (AI).

Of course, some might say that, in the world we're headed toward, steering wheels themselves will be redundant.

The future of motoring is always in the minds of vehicle designers and Jaguar Land Rover's designers have been hard at work coming up with an ultramodern steering wheel.

That's because, come 2040, the car-maker thinks that instead of owning a auto you'll be a member of a car-sharing scheme, preferably Jaguar's.

The wheel will apparently be a significant feature on an upcoming Jaguar concept vehicle called Future-Type but whether or not it'll ever actually go into production is another matter.

Jaguar Land Rover suggests that Sayer will connect Jaguar Land Rover customers to a club, which allows customers to own the own vehicle or to share with others amongst the community.

"Simply ask Sayer from the comfort of your living room and it will work out when you get up, when a vehicle needs to autonomously arrive at your door and even advise which parts of the journey you might enjoy driving yourself", explained the company.

Sayer owes its name to one of the most prominent designers from Jaguar's past, Malcolm Sayer, who worked for the British marque between 1951 and 1970.

Maybe we won't own cars in the future, but we may still own parts of them. The situation is harder for Jaguar as it has to take into account whether the steering wheel used for different vehicles will be compatible with different models within the brand as more than 50 percent of the offerings will not have caught up to that level of technology even at the time of production.

According to Jaguar'ss announcement, Sayer will be able to carry out "hundreds of tasks", the device is created to be used in your home.

In the spirit of collaborative innovation, Jaguar Land Rover has invited an array of speakers to take part in a series of debates and talks throughout Tech Fest, attended by an audience of global influencers and journalists from four continents.
